It all had to start somewhere. The January 7, 1997 Decree of the President of Uzbekistan and the January 13, 1997 Resolution of the Cabinet of  Ministers legally established “UMID” to support education of talented youth  abroad. Umid fund finances academic programs for selected individuals in  undergraduate and graduate studies.

The main goals of the Foundation are:

• training highly skilled specialists in various fields
• undertaking sociopolitical, spiritual and economic reforms in Uzbekistan
• selecting and training talented youth to creating new plans and programs for the education system
• organizing various academic contests for the youth
• establishing exchange program relations with leading Universities and  scientific centers of the foreign countries, international and foreign organizations and foundations involved in the education

Nearly 500 students have been selected over the first two years of the Foundation's existence. Umid Foundation is currently in the process of selecting  a new "generation" of the grantees. In 1997 we, Umid grantees, came up with a  new informal common name for students in this program: "Umidie". Umidies are  placed in undergraduate and graduate schools of the US, Europe and Japan. Umid  students' majors range from business to law, from mathematics to agriculture,  from computer science to journalism.

In addition to the academic program, in 1999 Umid sent over 50 applicants from companies, organizations and city administrations to  analogous institutions abroad on short term training programs.

One of the criteria for selection on an Umid-sponsored program is working knowledge of foreign languages. Language tests are conducted by these organizations:

• US Universities - ACCELS
• UK Universities - BRITISH COUNCIL
• Universities of Germany - DAAD
• Universities of France - CNOUS
