The Province of Kashkadarya

The total area of the Province is 28 400 square kilometers. The climate is typically continental, arid and partly subtropical. The Province has a population 2 029 000 with more than 73% living in rural areas. Kashkadarya is divided into 14 administrative districts with Karshi as its administrative Center. The town of Karshi has a population of 177 000. Other important towns are Shakhrisabz, Kitab, Kasan, Mubarekh, Yakkabag, Guzar and Kamashi. There are 14 joint ventures with foreign investment functioning In the Province. Kashkadarya Province has significant fuel and hydrocarbon resources. It takes first place in the country for oil and natural gas processing, an industry whose growth is based on the favorable oil and gas deposits throughout the region. The industry's largest enterprise is the Mubarekh Oil and Gas Processing Plant. There are also large deposits of gas condensate to be found in the area.

Kashkadarya has a stable light, industry, foodstuff industry and construction materials industry. The main goals for industrial development in the Province are: compatible goods production, foreign investment, efficient utilization of local resources. A new plant processing wool will soon be built in Karshi. The construction of a new textile factory equipped with the latest technologies and modern machinery. This new factory will be based on the existing Yakkabag Textile Factory. It is estimated to process 1 500 tons of yarn annually with further processing into coarse calico.

Industrial production could increase considerably if a new cannery, based on the existing Mirishkor factory, could be built. This factory already has an annual capacity of 3 million cans. The Province needs foreign investment amounting to US $77,61 million in order to continue with its development projects. Major agricultural activities are cotton growing, especially thin-fiber cotton grade, various crops and livestock. The irrigation infrastructure is very well developed. The large Talimardjan man-made lake is a reliable water source. The railways in the Province have a total length of 350 km, while roads total 30 000 km. The total distance covered by tarred roads is 4,000 km. The region has regular flights to Tashkent and other cities in Uzbekistan. Shakhrisabz, the birthplace of Amir Temur is the main tourist attraction in this region.
