The Province of Tashkent

Tashkent Province is the most economically developed in the country with 9,081 enterprises, 128 registered with foreign investments. Foreign trade totalled US $685 million for 1997.

The Province rates 2nd in the country for industrial production. Industrial activitiy includes energy, mining, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, chemicals, radio-electronics, textiles, cotton purification and processing, agricultural production and processing and footwear. Enterprises in the Province produce ferrous and non-ferrous metals, agricultural equipment, elevator and transportation equipment, mineral fertilizers, textiles clothing, footwear and much more. There is an open-pit quarry extracting brown coal in Angren. There are also numerous heat power plants throughout the area.

The Chirchik chemical enterprise, Elektrokhimprom, and the Almalik chemical plant, Ammofos, take the lead in the national chemical industry. Natural gas, crude oil, sulphur, table salt, ozokerit, limestone, granite, and waste products of non-ferrous metallurgy, raw cotton and hemp are used as raw
materials. The main export product of the chemical industry is ammoniac nitrate, carbamid and ammonium.

Tashkent province boasts a highly developed agricultural industry. Cultivation generally takes place on irrigated land. The province's main crop is cotton but cereals, melons and gourds, fruit and vegetables and citrus fruits growing is increasing. Hemp is the crop that is cultivated for technical purposes. Livestock are used mainly for meat and milk production. Fish breading dams, horse breading and poultry breading is also prevalent in this area. By attracting foreign investments and using local raw materials it is planned to produce packing materials, canned vegetables, fruit juices, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, poultry, meat, raw silk yarn, cotton cloth, sock and stockings, leather wear, polychlorvinyl tape for cotton sewing, furniture and more.

In order to implement programs for the development of industry by the year 2000, an estimated amount of US $ 330 million in foreign investment needs to be found. The best economical return will come from investing in chemical and light industry pr agricultural production and processing.

The province has a well-developed transport infrastructure. The total length of its railways is over 360 km and the total length of its roads is 3771 km. The province's major highways are The Great Uzbek Highway, a road that connects Tashkent to the Ferghana Valley and the Tashkent-Angren-Kokand route over the Kamchik Pass (Kuramin Ridge), Tashkent has a large international airport. The unique Chatkal National Park with beautiful mountains and forests is located within the Tashkent Province area.
