Tashkent City

Administratively the city is divided into 11 districts. It is situated in the northwestern part of the country, in the valley of the Chirchik River. The climate is typically continental with relatively cold winters and hot, dry summers. Approximately a quarter of all industrial production takes place in Tashkent. Activities in and around the city include the production of aircraft,. radio-electronics, various agricultural machinery, tractors, equipment for cleaning cotton, construction materials, textiles and clothing, footwear, porcelain and more.

The well-developed transport infrastructure links all districts with buses, trams and trolleybuses. The modern underground metro system, which has been in operation since 1977, complements the already affective transport infrastructure of the city. Modern telecommunications connect subscribers to any part of the country and practically in any part of the world. Cellular telecommunication systems and telex communication systems are also operational in the city. A powerful Telecenter provides effective reception of programs from numerous international locations.

The city is the largest transportation center in Central Asia. There are two railway stations, a number of cargo terminals and several intercity bus stations. There are railway links between Uzbekistan and its neighbors, including Russia.

Regular flights to Moscow, Delhi, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Kuala-Lumpur, Beijing, Tel-Aviv and other international destinations originate from the very modern Tashkent International Airport.

Tashkent has a history back to over 2000 years. The unique architectural monuments attracting tourists from all over the world have been well-preserved for all to see and enjoy. A policy to upgrade tourism by providing services comparable to international standards, is presently being implemented.

When it comes to arts and culture, Tashkent is buzzing with activity. There are many theaters to visit, the Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theater being the largest of them all. There are also Uzbek and Russian drama theaters, operetta theaters, puppet theaters, children’s theaters and experimental theaters. For history and culture there is the Fine Arts Museum, Applied Arts Museum, History of Uzbekistan Museum, Amir Temur Museum and other interesting places.

Higher education establishments include the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, the Tashkent State University, the Agricultural Academy, two Medical colleges, the University of World Languages, the Tashkent State Technical University and many more institutes and colleges. The numerous sports grounds and sport facilities include the largest tennis court in the country, Yunus-Obod, where most of the national and international competitions take place.
