Museum is a Mirror of History
It is difficult to overestimate the importance of museums in the cultural life of the Republic. They perform not only
an enlightening role but also facilitate the education and bringing up the younger generation in the spirit of patriotism,
humanism and pride for their great ancestors who made a great contribution into the development of the world civilization.
The decrees of the government underline an important public role of museum inventory collections, which brightly reflect the
nation's history.
Irrespective of the difficulties connected with transition to market economy, the government pays much attention to the
development of museum business, restoration of the unique historical monuments. It can be proved by the evident example
- the establishment of the Museum of the Temurides Dynasty. It arouses an admiration of visitors not only by its unique
exhibits but also by the originality of architecture and artistic interior and exterior decoration of the building.
Under the Ministry for cultural affairs there are 68 museums in the Republic: 21 -for Nature studies, 10 - artistic
ones, 14 -Memorial, 7 - Literary and 3 - sanctuary museums in Bukhara, Samarkand and "Ichan-Kala" in Khiva. To the
largest artistic repositories may be attested the State Museum of Art, the State Museum of Applied Arts in Tashkent
and the Karakalpak State Museum of Arts named after I.V. Savitsky.
There are operating artistic galleries in the cities of Urgench (founded in 1969), Angren and Sirdarya (from 1979). The
artistic sections are opened in the museums of Local Nature studies in Kokand and Jizzak. Almost all museums have created
their own special inventory collections, local nature sections for scientific enlightenment, history and arts. The expositions
of these museums are being upgraded on the basis of modern requirements of museum's business, they are constantly supplied by
new exhibits.
There's the only Museum of Nature in Uzbekistan operating for more than 120 years. Due to the statistics data as of January
1,1999, currently there are around 1,5 million of objects in the museums of our Republic.
Besides collecting and housing the exhibits, all museums conduct and organize various activities, such as lectures,
excursions, workshops and literary parties. They organize the ethnographic displays dedicated to spring holiday Navruz.
The number of employees amounts to more than 2000 highly qualified specialists.
In response to decrees of the Cabinet of Ministers "On measures for improvement of museum business in the Republic" (1994),
"On measures for support of museums activities" (1998), as well as to an Edict of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan"
On radical improvement and upgrading of museums" activities" (1998), the Ministry for cultural Affairs in collaboration with
the International Charity Fund "Oltin Meros" (the "Golden Heritage"), Academy of Arts, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of
Labor have developed a scientific concept and program for further improvement of museums' activities and their financial state.
For further flow, propagation and promotion of cultural and spiritual heritage among the people, there have been established a
special scientific and methodological, spiritual-and-enlightenment illustrated journal "Moziydan Sado" (the "Echo of History").
The Ministry for cultural Affairs and the Board for Museums collaborates with foreign Embassies and representations of Germany,
Italy, Japan, etc. in the area of further development of cultural relations and they have achieved distinctive successes.
